Introduction to International Championships and World Records
On February 1st, 2001, the first big base jumping event in the world happened in Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur Kl Tower International, organised by Menara Kuala Lumpur. Around 434 jumpers completed this event, and Malaysia was the first country in the world to do this event. This event is held every year, but the Pandemic COVID-19 has stopped this event for 3 years, which enters its 20th year, from February 3 to February 5, 2023. Almost 140 international and Malaysian jumpers participated.
Menara Alor Setar in Kedah joined the KL Tower Jump in 2002, building on its success from the previous year. Due to these two occasions, Malaysia is the only nation in the world to hold two similar events: “A WORLD FIRST, TWO TOWERS, TWO JUMPS.” On January 31st, the Menara Alor Setar International was held. which coincided with the sultan of Kedah’s birthday celebration.
The KL International Tower Jump was held in 2002 on February 3. Around 40 base jumpers participate, and the extensive media coverage. Malaysia International Championship of Extreme Skydive 2002, World Basae Cup 2002. This event was held from December 28th, 2002 to January 5th, 2003 and was organised by MIXSA. 16 countries with 57 associations took part in the event. This is the world’s first championship ever held in Malaysia.
Menera KL again took part in the 2003 international championship of the XTREM Skydive World Base Cup. Twin towers are also a part of this championship in the aerial acrobatics category. Around the world, 43 competitors participated, and it took place from December 28th, 2003, to January 5th, 2004.
In 2005, KL International Tower Jump organised a wonderful event. previous event, due to the last-minute nature of how things are done in Malaysia, the organisation did the most wonderful job it ever took. In this event, Gary Cunningham broke the world record; he completed 133 jumps and the most base jumps in 24 hours. Gray was assisted by a team of 12 people packing parachutes. This tournament was extended to be 3 days at Alor Setar Tower and 2 days at KL Tower. 650 base jumps were completed by 46 base jumpers.
Malaysia became the leader of BASE Jump in the world. In 2006, KL Tower International BASE Jump Merdeka Circuit ran from August 12th–27th, 2006. This year, Malaysia gets its first name for hosting a BASE jumping event, which includes five different buildings. It included the following buildings:
- 12th–13th August, Sabah, Menara Tun Mustapha
- 15th August (Trail event), Sarawak, Menara Pelita
- 17th–18th August, Kedah, Menara Komtar
- 20th August, Penang, Menara Komtar

In this event, over 68 base jumpers from around the world joined, and 1880 base jumps were completed during the tournament. And after a huge effort, the organisers produced the biggest and best event in 2007. 2780 jumps were completed during this golden event.
Challenges Faced by Base Jumping Events
In 2008, this event made a mistake, which is not good as well. In 2008, in desperation to make up numbers, two Indonesian beginner sky drivers were hired to come and look like base jumpers, but after this, one of them crashed into the Telecom Malaysia building all the way down.
This would be the start of a few years of recklessly organising the event. About 40 international jumpers attended the BASE jump event in Malaysia in 2008. The event lasted over 4 weeks, from August 3rd to August 31st, and included six buildings in 5 different states of Malaysia. Over 1200 jumps were completed for this event.
The 2009 event took place from October 3 to October 25. Menara KL fully organised this year’s KL Tower Jump event. They increased the BASE jumping experience entry requirements by a factor of 10 in a desperate attempt to lure more BASE jumpers back to the event.
This was seen as a high-risk and irresponsible move. after seeing the scary results of the event organised in such a reckless manner. KL Tower events were strongly warned that if they continued to try to organise BASE events in the same native and careless manner, very serious injuries and deaths were certain to occur in the future.
After and after KL Tower International BASE Jump were more interesting, and all over the country, the BASE jumpers attracted this event and made it an adventure event. Far more people were waiting for this event to see what would happen next. In 2021, an interesting part was added, which is the 100-Fat Walk named by the organisation. watching KL Tower’s new representative in 2018 because of threatened legal action. It is not a fact, because everything has both good and bad sides. Adventurers enjoy these events more.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this event was postponed for 3 years. It is back from February 3 to 5, 2023, with more than 140 international and Malaysian jumpers attending.
Conclusion
This event is making this place an adventure, and over the world, BASE jumpers are also coming to the event and entering this event for adventure. Visitors can capture memorable memories and enjoy the scenic view of Kuala Lumpur. This location has become a hub for thrill seekers and adventurers interested in BASE jumping.
